When the P1 was launched it formed part of the ‘holy trinity’ of hybrid hypercars along with the LaFerrari and Porsche 918 Spyder. It was the only one of the three to use a turbocharged engine, a twin-turbo 3.8-litre V8 and it’s also the rarest one with just 375 units made. The P1 was the first McLaren Ultimate Series car, this line of cars now also includes the Speedtail, Senna and Elva. Still one of the fastest and most iconic cars of the modern era, this particular one comes in a rare metallic purple, known as Cadbury Purple.
The P1 was first shown at the Paris Motor Show in 2012 and deliveries beginning in October 2013. This new breed of hypercars combined combustion engines with electric motors and in the case of the P1, McLaren used their well known M838T engine producing 737 hp with a 179 hp electric motor, this meant a combined output of 916 hp. At the time these were jaw-dropping figures and its performance backed those figures. 0 to 100 km/h in 2.8 s, top speed limited to 350 km/h, sub-seven minute lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife, in a package with a kerb weight of 1,490kg with batteries capable of over 10 km of electric-only range.
Today, the P1 has not aged, it looks like it was revealed at the latest motor show despite already celebrating its 10th birthday. Along with the LaFerrari and 918, it was a pioneer of the modern hypercar using electric power to ‘torque fill’ to address turbo lag and therefore increase response. It is an extremely desirable car and many would claim that McLaren has not made a better car since.
This is example has had a single owner from new and shows just over 1,000km on the odometer.
