The “8C Competizione” was first introduced as a concept car at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show, which quickly became a hot topic and gained popularity. However, it was until Alfa Romeo unveiled the production version at the 2006 Paris Motor Show with the intention to produce only 500 units. The car became an instant hit, as they have received 1,400 orders from around the world.
It’s the first two-seater front-engined rear-wheel drive coupe since the Alfa Romeo SZ, and it was the ticket to re-enter both the supercar market and the US after its 22-year absence. Its striking design pays homage to its past Alfa models, while also establishing a new visual language for the brand, which influenced models such as the Giulietta, MiTo and the 4C. Its headlight design being inspired by the 33 Stradale and the rear lights pay tribute to the Giulia TZ. While its classic ‘masked-look’, the ‘backbone’ of the design, harkens back from the Giulietta SZ.
The “8C” derives from its successful race cars with an 8 cylinder engine from the 1930s. Designed by Vittorio Jano, the engine powered its race cars and won prestigious races, such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The name “Competizione” comes in honour of the “6C 2500 Competizione” driven by Juan Manuel Fangio in the 1950 Mille Miglia. Therefore, the “8C Competizione” is called the successor of the legends.
Despite its classic styling, what makes the 8C sophisticated is from what’s underneath. The entire body is made out of carbon fibre, which is very rare nowadays. Under the bonnet is the naturally aspirated 4.7-litre V8 engine. Dubbed the “F136TC”, this high-revving engine is made by Ferrari and produces a maximum output of 450hp at 7,000rpm. The engine is linked to a 6-speed “Q-Select” semi-automatic gearbox, which was also used by Ferrari (F1 Matic) and Maserati (Cambiocorsa).
With such a marvellous engine, it can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in less than 4.2 seconds with a top speed of over 290 km/h and. No exaggeration to say that this is a car with a supercar level of performance, but even without this power, there are enthusiasts who are attracted to the car’s design alone.
With the beautiful body lines that symbolises Alfa Romeo and the power derived from Ferrari, the 8C Competizione is the manifestation of the brand, by reminding us with its rich history of the brand and the capabilities to produce what would be one of the most beautiful and advanced Alfa Romeo of its time.
This example sports the “Competizione Red’ exterior, which was developed for this particular car. The interior is finished in Poltrona Frau black leather with the seat pattern that was popular at the time. The odometer clocks in at 234 km, making it a rare ultra low mileage car. The entire car is in mint condition, complete with all its accessories, factory tools, body cover, and warning triangle.
