Tommykaira, which made its debut in 1987 by manufacturing and selling Japan’s first officially recognized tuning car, the “M20” based on the R31 Skyline, gained high recognition both domestically and internationally. In 1995, the fully original Tommykaira ZZ was introduced, further solidifying their reputation for excellence in tuning.
The R Series was created to realize what the BNR34 GT-R should have aspired to be—hardcore styling, impressive throttle response, and strengthened suspension capable of handling high output. The series included three models: the R, which produced 365 hp; the R-s, producing 420 hp; and the R-z, producing 530 hp. Each model could also be chosen with a V-Spec base.
This particular vehicle is the R-z, the highest-grade model in the series. Moreover, it is based on the V-Spec version. The production numbers for these cars were very limited, with only a few dozen produced.
The first thing that stands out is the front mask, which features a much larger opening compared to the regular BNR34, and the specially designed blister fenders that further widen the already muscular exterior. The air ducts, designed with cooling in mind, the exposed racing-type intercooler, and the front spoiler connected to the large blister fenders are not just for show—they serve a functional purpose.
Moving to the rear, you’ll find a large two-stage wing mounted on aluminum struts, equipped with an adjustable flap—a clear indication that the car was tuned with circuit driving in mind. Upon opening the bonnet, you’ll see the RB26DETT engine, which radiates an aura of something extraordinary. The R-z has been specially tuned to produce 530 hp.
The interior is equipped with custom seats, which feature the Tommykaira emblem embroidered on them. The car also features aluminum-cut panels for the gauges, a shift-up point lamp, and a Tommykaira original digital speedometer. The shift knob is also made of aluminum, and the Shippoyaki emblem is embedded at the top, inviting the driver into the world of speed.
Under the hood, the engine has been modified with a 100cc bore-up, a custom crankshaft, and a dedicated turbo to enhance not just power but also precision, allowing the engine to produce its true potential output.
To handle the high power, the suspension features Bilstein shocks, and the car is fitted with 19-inch forged magnesium wheels (PRO R) used in F1, which help reduce unsprung weight. The braking system consists of AP Racing 6-pot calipers paired with specialized rotors.
The current owner was one of those who was captivated by Tommykaira’s “hardcore styling and power.” After seeing it in a magazine, the owner began searching for a Tommykaira R Series and found the Tommykaira R-z, the highest-grade model, which had only been produced in small numbers. Without hesitation, the owner purchased it.
When asked about the car life with this coveted model, the owner shared, “I hardly drove it except for inspections and maintenance. I’ve had it for about 15 years, and the mileage is around 2,000 km.” As the owner mentioned, the odometer shows just 20,910 km.
This car was built to be driven, but the owner lived in Tohoku, where the opportunities to drive it were limited due to weather conditions. Despite this, the car was always kept ready for use with regular dealer inspections, showing the owner’s passion for owning and enjoying the car.
With only a few dozen units produced, this is a rare R-z with under 20,000 km on the odometer. It has never been modified, maintaining its original condition—making it a truly rare find.
