Enzo Ferrari developed the first 180° angle V12 engine (also known as a horizontally opposed-12, or a flat-12 engine) for Formula 1 cars in 1964. However, it wasn’t until 1971 that a flat-12 engine was installed in a streetcar.
The 365 GT4 BB, with its mid-engine layout designed by Pininfarina and elegant bodywork crafted by Scaglietti, was unveiled at the Turin Auto Show. Unlike previous models, which used a ladder frame, this new flagship model featured a space-frame technology with a truss structure, signaling a new era for Ferrari.
While the internal structure and some external panels were made of steel, the doors, nose, and tail sections were constructed from aluminum, and fiberglass was introduced for the lower body. The engine was a dry-sump type, mounted in a mid-engine layout behind the driver. The radiator was placed in front of a small front trunk.
In 1976, the 365 GT4 BB was replaced by the 512 BB, which saw increased engine displacement from 4,390 cc to 4,943 cc. Then, in 1981, to comply with increasingly strict emissions regulations, the 512 BB was updated to the 512 BBi, which featured the Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system, and was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
A total of 1,007 units of the 512 BBi were produced between 1981 and 1984. When production of the model ceased, Sergio Scaglietti, who oversaw the body manufacturing, was quoted as saying, “The BBi was the last Ferrari we handmade”.
This example features a Rosso Corsa exterior and a tan interior. It is Ferrari Classiche certified, and its condition has been well-maintained. With the ease of starting the engine thanks to the fuel injection system, this car is very suitable as an entry point for vintage Ferraris. Additionally, documents from the time of purchase held by the current owner are available, confirming that the car has been carefully serviced by the dealer, and the car is identifiable well looked after.
