For the 1987 Grand Prix season, Ferrari enlisted drivers Michele Alboreto as their first driver and Gerhard Berger (#28) as their second. This season featured the legendary 4 way battle between Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell, Ayrton Senna, and Alain Prost. Berger drove this car throughout the season. There was on-going trouble with the newly-developed V6 turbo-charged engine during the beginning of the season, however going into the second half, the team began to improve their standing as the engine stabilised and all issues were ironed out.
In the 12th round in Portugal, Berger achieved pole position and finished the race in second place. In the 15th round at Suzuka Circuit, Japan, Berger achieved another pole but this time converted to a race win. This was the first time in two years that Ferrari had won a race. Two weeks later, during the 16th and final round at Adelaide Street Circuit, Australia, Berger achieved another pole-to-win in this car, becoming the first Ferrari driver since Gilles Villenueve to win two races in a row. Berger eventually finished the season in 5th and Alboreto in 7th, an impressive feat given the number of retired races.
